Lawrie has lived in Bicester since 1992 and firmly believes in local solutions for local people. Both he and his wife Rose have served Bicester on both Bicester Town Council and Cherwell District Council. He has represented the residents of North Bicester on Oxfordshire County Council since 2006. Over this period of 14 years of public service, Lawrie has been a focal part of the team delivering for Bicester and the wider community. Having served as the Cabinet Member for Finance, Lawrie was instrumental in helping the Council protect important local services despite challenging economic conditions. He is now the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health. As well as his Council duties, Lawrie continues to serve with the Bicester Hospital League of Friends and is a Royal British Legion member. He had the honour of serving as Bicester Town Mayor in 2001-2.
