Cllr Dr Chukwudi Okeke has left the Labour Group and switched allegiance to the Conservatives on Cherwell District Council.
Chuk said, “After being a member of the Labour Party for over a decade and serving the Party diligently in different capacities, including the Vice Chair of Oxford and District Labour Party, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group at the Cherwell District Council, and District and Town Councillor representing Banbury Cross and Neithrop, I feel that Labour has lost its focus in building a healthy and inclusive society, a society where everyone, irrespective of their background can thrive and be valued. I got into politics to serve the community and make a difference to peoples’ lives, but the Labour Party has now abandoned its values and me. I consider the aims and objectives represented in the Conservative Party as credible, inclusive and progressive irrespective of one’s background. I have therefore decided to join the Conservative Party with immediate effect.”
Conservative Group leader Eddie Reeves remarked, “I'm delighted to welcome Chuk to the Conservative family. I think Chuk's been impressed by our practical approach to opposition on Cherwell District Council." He went on to say "Sound finances, common sense policies and a welcome approach to all sections of the community is what we're about locally. Chuk sees that, and I couldn't be happier that someone of his calibre has decided to join us.”
NOCF Chairman Adam Nell added, “We are very pleased to welcome Dr Okeke to the Conservatives Party. He is a formidable Councillor and I’m sure he will continue to serve his residents well.”
The Conservative Group are now the official opposition on Cherwell District Council. Chuk will continue his duties as Deputy Mayor of Banbury joining his new Conservative colleagues on Banbury Town Council.
